We acknowledge that sponsorships are traditionally used to build brands. However, the philosophy underlying our chosen sponsorships ensures a developmental aspect to them. This ensures a sustainable element that aligns to Nedbank’s strategic aspiration to lead as a corporate citizen.
GOLF
The changing face of golf in South Africa offers extensive and diverse sponsorship opportunities, from professional competition to golf development and golf for people with disabilities. Through its varied golf sponsorships Nedbank is able to develop its profile among its entire client base and to generate exposure to diverse target markets, including the emerging market, women, the disabled and the previously disadvantaged.
The Sports Trust Golf Challenge (a joint initiative between Nedbank and Sun International) raises R1 million in aid of sport development annually and is played the day after the Nedbank Golf Challenge. Corporate participants take on the Gary Player course with the same tee and pin layouts as the professionals. Since inception over R9 million has been raised in aid of The Sports Trust.
The Nedbank Affinity Cup, introduced in 2007, forms part of the Sunshine Tour and is played on the Lost City Golf Course three days before the Nedbank Golf Challenge. As part of its sponsorship of this event, Nedbank donates an amount equal to the Affinity Cup winner’s prize money to a selected golf- related development project each year. In 2008 The Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund received this donation.
Currently, Nedbank Group’s golf sponsorship portfolio comprises the following:
- The Nedbank Golf Challenge.
- Nedbank SouthAfrican Disabled Golf Open.
- The NedbankAffinity Cup (Sunshine Tour event).
- The SportsTrust Golf Challenge (joining Sun International to make up the two founding trustees).
Nedbank is also the official bank to the Sunshine Tour.
SPORT FOR THE DISABLED
Nedbank’s involvement in supporting disabled sportsmen and sportswomen dates back to 1992. The highlights of this sponsorship category are undoubtedly the annual Nedbank Championships for the Physically Disabled, which has been held since 1992 and our support of the South African Paralympics team who competed with distinction at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games. Former paralympic swimming star and Nedbank employee, Scott Field, was selected as the manager of the swimming team.
The 2008 Beijing games marked Nedbank’s 14th year as a sponsor of the SA Paralympics team, and the bank has committed to supporting the team through to the London Paralympic Games in 2012.
Nedbank’s ‘sport for the disabled’ sponsorship portfolio includes:
- the Nedbank National Championships for the Physically Disabled;
- the NedbankTechnical Excellence andAdministration Programme;
- the Nedbank South African Disabled Golf Open; and
- partnership with, and support of, the South African Paralympics team.
ROAD RUNNING
The past year was the third year of a five-year sponsorship deal between Nedbank and Athletics South Africa (ASA), which includes the hugely popular Nedbank City Marathon and Matha Series (short course). As a highly accessible and affordable sport, road running gives Nedbank a sponsorship platform from which to effectively reach clients and prospects from every cultural, social and economic background. Through the Nedbank City Marathon and Matha Series, young athletes are encouraged to improve their talents, while occasional runners are given the opportunity to enjoy the sport according to their individual abilities. The events have even become not-to-be-missed family affairs on the SA social calendar.
Nedbank’s road-running sponsorship portfolio includes:
- the Nedbank City Marathon and Matha Series (this series is run by ASA in outlying areas in an effort to develop the sport throughout South Africa);
- the Comrades Marathon -The Comrades Marathon Home from Home Programme donated 50 000 to house runners who could not afford their own accommodation at the race; and
- the Nedbank running clubs - The Nedbank running clubs funded 30 learners for schooling, accommodation and training for a year. Funds were also donated to development clubs and coaches.
BRAND AMBASSADORS
Nedbank’s ‘brand ambassadors’ are supported and encouraged by the group to promote the association and goodwill between the Nedbank brand and the sport in which they participate. Nedbank currently has three brand ambassadors, namely Ashleigh Simon (golf), Oscar Pistorius (sport for the disabled) and Hendrik Ramaala (road running). All three are exceptional sporting talents and demonstrate the type of values and attitudes that Nedbank prizes most highly, whether in sport or business. During 2008 these brand ambassadors appeared at Nedbank roadshows, functions and prizegivings, as well as other events, and were also featured in Nedbank advertising campaigns.
SOCCER
The year under review saw the first of a five-year sponsorship of the Nedbank Cup – the South African Premier League’s official knockout cup competition. The competition features 32 teams, 16 of which are from the Premier League, eight from the National First Division and eight from the South African Football Association. The Nedbank Cup is the only South African soccer competition that addresses football development through the inclusion of and amateur teams in the same tournament, effectively giving rising stars the opportunity to hone their skills against the best in the country. Mamelodi Sundowns took the top honours in the inaugural 2008 Nedbank Cup, with Mpumalanga Black Aces, a National First Division team, taking the runner-up spot.
THE BUSINESSWOMEN’S ASSOCIATION
Since its inception in 2005 the Businesswomen’s Association (BWA) has enjoyed the support of the Nedbank Group as part of the bank’s Deep Green aspirations of leading transformation, being highly involved in the community and environment and being the most respected brand. Through its support of the BWA, Nedbank continues to play its part in assisting professional South African women to develop in their careers, while simultaneously growing its market share by meeting the banking and finance requirements of businesses owned or managed by women.
