NEDBANK'S SUSTAINABILITY JOURNEY

ABOUT NEDBANK GROUP

Nedbank Group is one of the four largest banking groups in South Africa and operates through its principal banking subsidiaries, Nedbank Limited and Imperial Bank Limited (in which it holds a 50,1% interest). The group, listed on JSE since 1969, offers a comprehensive range of wholesale and retail banking services through its primary business clusters: Nedbank Corporate, Nedbank Capital, Nedbank Retail, Nedbank Business Banking and Nedbank Bancassurance and Wealth.

With a clear focus on being a bank for all, Nedbank Group operates primarily in South and southern Africa, where it enjoys a vast footprint, a significant share of the market, and a highly diverse client base.

TURNING VISION INTO REALITY

Nedbank Group’s vision is to become southern Africa’s most highly rated and respected bank by our staff, clients, shareholders, regulators and communities. In achieving this vision, the bank has identified a number of long-term objectives, which are referred to internally as its Deep Green aspirations. These are:
  • to become a great place to work, a great place to bank and a great place to invest;
  • to unleash synergies;
  • to be worldclass at managing risk;
  • to create a community of leaders;
  • to have the most respected and aspirational financial services brand;
  • to be recognised for being highly involved in the community and environment;
  • to lead in transformation; and
  • to live our values.

Nedbank Group is a values-driven organisation and its vision, strategy and Deep Green aspirations are underpinned by the agreed group values of integrity, respect, accountability, pushing beyond boundaries, and being people-centred.

These values drive the attitudes, decisions and behaviours of the bank and its people and, along with the vision and strategic imperatives of the group, are key to the attainment of its sustainability objectives.

BUILDING ON THE PAST; LOOKING FORWARD TO THE FUTURE

2009 saw the Nedbank Group strategy being refined on the back of the learnings and experiences of the global credit and economic crises. The bank is now more focused on improving any identified areas of weakness, while seeking ways to deliver sustainable economic-profit (EP) growth, build the competitiveness of its franchises, and remain a leading banking group in an increasingly competitive environment. To this end Nedbank Group has identified the following eight strategic focus areas for 2010:

  • Become client-driven.
  • Manage for value.
  • Step change in non-interest revenue (NIR) growth.
  • Manage risk as an enabler.
  • Enhance productivity and execution.
  • Build a unique culture.
  • Accelerate transformation.
  • Lead as a corporate citizen.

Detailed information on Nedbank Group, its structure, strategy, operational footprint, review of 2009, further explanation of strategic focus areas and the ways in which the group intends translating them into operational initiatives that impact on all stakeholders are included in the
