THE ARTS & CULTURE TRUST

The Arts & Culture Trust (ACT) represents a unique alignment of various agencies and organisations involved in the development of culture and the fostering of creativity across South Africa. It achieves its objectives by developing and promoting arts, culture and heritage, advancing and supporting artists and cultural heritage practitioners, educating people about our arts, culture and heritage, constructing facilities, and creating an infrastructure to support the arts and culture sector.

Founded in 1994, ACT has funded over 500 projects across the spectrum in arts, culture and heritage sector to the value of R14 million.

Since its inception Nedbank has donated nearly R9 million to ACT through the Nedbank Arts Affinity programme. In 2008 nearly R500 000 was donated to ACT (2007: R418 063).

  Art Affinity Donations

The following are some of the projects supported by the Nedbank Arts Affinity through its donations to ACT:

ACT NOW!

The ACT NOW! campaign is a significant and historic milestone in South African theatre. South Africa’s answer to Broadway Cares, the programme raises money for needy artists as well as HIV/Aids charities and organisations.

In South Africa one of the beneficiaries has been Nkosi’s Haven in Johannesburg. ACT NOW! is a funding framework for ACT to raise money to support projects promoting awareness and understanding of HIV/Aids to the broader community. It strives to support artists living by empowering them helping them develop craft and providing conditions in which they can grow to be independent and self- sustaining.

TSA LAPENG MUSIC INITIATIVE

The Tsa Lapeng Music Initiative, implemented by the Ma Afrika Cultural Organisation, is aimed at helping youth and children from rural communities to read, write and play music. The project aims to redress past inequalities where rural-based youth and children were denied the opportunity of music education. Some 35 young people undergo weekly lessons in recorder, flute, keyboard, trumpet, clarinet, piano and violin, and older children also receive training in music theory.

CHILDREN’S ARTS FESTIVAL

Hosted at the St Andrew’s Preparatory School in Grahamstown, the Children’s Arts Festival is a comprehensive creative arts programme for children under 13 years of age. The programme is designed to encourage children to discover their creativity and release their abilities in lively and imaginative ways. The daily diary includes a carefully chosen National Arts Festival production and arts-related workshops with activities such as music, dance and drama, and handcraft art.
